Rating Directories
One of the most important things we do here at Directory Recap is rate the directories in our directory list. Anyone can give you a bulk list of directories, but telling you which directories to focus on and which to stay away from can help increase your ROI on the time you spend seeking quality links to your website.
Here are a few things to consider when rating a directory:
Is the directory "Human Edited"?
Directories that require some sort of human review before adding your website can be the best directories. They remain on topic, and generally do not create "Bad Neighborhoods" that you would prefer not to be associated with.
Are the links "Direct Links"?
Many directories use redirects, javascript, and other methods to link to your website. While this may be fine for sending direct traffic, it also eliminates the potential search engine benifit that a direct link will have.
Is the directory indexed?
Directories are dropped from search engine indexes all the time. If they are not in the indexes, making them easy to find by web surfers, then how can they send traffic to you? We check to see how many pages of each directory are in each major search engine.
Does the directory have any traffic?
While we agree that Alexa rankings should not be used as a sole determining factor for a website's popularity, a website with a 0 Alexa ranking or one in the millions, may not be seeing very much real traffic and may not be a great place to invest a lot of money or time promoting your website.
